Helen Van Gosen, 89 of Waverly Hall, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Columbus Hospice.
A graveside service will be held in Parkhill Cemetery on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Visitation will be Friday evening at Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, Georgia from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
Helen was born on February 13, 1928 in Ingolstadt, Germany. Helen grew up in Germany with her two brothers, Henry and Rudi, and married the late Donald R. (Bob) Van Gosen, of Berkley, WV, after the war. Helen accompanied her husband Bob and their daughter Helene throughout his 20 year military career to Germany, Colorado, North Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia. Helen and Bob moved to the Columbus area in 1963 where Bob retired from the Army. Bob passed away in December 1969.

Helen was a phenomenal cook and enjoyed preparing German cuisine and traditional Southern American dishes for her family and friends. She enjoyed bingo, bowling, and trips to Biloxi MS with her companion of 29 years, the late Douglas D. Dailey. Helen also enjoyed knitting, and her afghans and booties were prized by everyone she gave them to.

From the time Helen had her first St. Bernard dog in wartime Germany, she had a soft spot in her heart for animals. Two special pets in her life were her Chihuahua, Trixie, and her German Shepherd, Princess.

Helen lived through difficult times in wartime and immediate postwar Germany and food and cold were always the central themes when she told her family and friends about her experiences. It was perhaps because of these experiences that she would never turn down a person in need and made a habit of helping people, whether providing food or shelter, or literally making clothing for them.

She is survived by her daughter, Helene Hanright, of Atlanta, Georgia, and leaves behind several close friends, among them, Bill and Lore Kelley of Columbus, Shirley Whitten of Waverly Hall, Lina Coody, Helga Burton, and Debbie Mayhew. Helen also leaves behind Doug Dailey's sons, daughters, and grandchildren to whom she was a second mother and grandmother; Lisa Durham (Danny) of Lakeland, FL, (Danielle, Hannah) ,Mike Dailey (Sadhana) of Columbus, Patrick Dailey (Marlene) of Orlando, FL, (Jazlyn), and Cheryl Jones of Lakeland, FL (Courtney).
