Martha Horton Norris, 89, passed away at home in her sleep May 13th. She was born and raised in Rome, GA. After receiving her Masters in Music at Converse College, she went to New York to study opera and voice with various maestros. During this time she served the USO on tour in Alaska. In 1953 she received a Fulbright scholarship to study Opera in Rome, Italy and made her debut in the lead role of "Madam Butterfly" at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma the following year. While in Europe she met fellow Fulbright Scholar in Architecture, Peter Norris, who would become her husband for 62 years.

After their marriage the couple lived in New York, Boston, and Virginia before settling in Atlanta in 1959 where they raised three children, Ashley, Kay and Chris. Martha continued her musical career briefly with the Atlanta Opera performing the lead role in "Fidelio".

Over the last 50 years much of the family’s time was spent in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where Martha performed numerous oratorios, concerts, recitals and musicals to raise money for various causes.

Friday afternoon, May 19th, from 2:00 to 5:00 Peter, Ashley, Kay and Chris will host friends in their home to share thoughts and memories.

The family would also like to express their appreciation to Crossroads Hospice for all their support
